GIMA joins the demand for action in response to Indianapolis Housing Agency crisis

The Greater Indianapolis Multifaith Alliance joined the Fair Housing Center of Central Indiana and others in demanding that Mayor Hogsett and the Indianapolis Housing Agency immediately address the emergency housing crisis of IHA property residents. As reported in the IndyStar and other media outlets, IHA is insolvent leaving IHA tenants in unsafe conditions including non-working elevators, air conditioning outages, and insect and rodent infestations. The IndyStar documented 4,731 open emergency work orders. The housing choice voucher program, also know as Section 8, administered by IHA, which serves 8000 Indianapolis families, is in disarray. Families promised vouchers had them rescinded; payments to landlords have not been made and required inspections of rental units are late. These are all failures by IHA and leave families at risk of losing housing.
