In Indianapolis, whether you're evicted or not can depend on where you live

Mykal McEldowney/IndyStar

In her final report for the Indy Star, reporter Ko Lyn Cheang, again, brings to light the injustice of Indiana’s eviction system. Cheang illuminates the glaring disparities between the nine township courts in Marion County. In Wayne Township, Judge Coleman processes evictions like a factory - in Lawrence Township, Judge Bacon makes sure to recognize the humanity in every person in her court.

Bringing consistency to evictions court in Marion County is critical. More critical is bringing humanity and human dignity to the courts. Indiana law supports and encourages the factory-like pace of some courts. And, as one judge said to me, “the out of state bad actors come to Indiana with evictions as part of their business plan.” We need to interrupt their business as usual.
