What is Affordable Housing?

Affordable Housing is not Subsidized Housing. While we absolutely need both, the critical shortage in Indianapolis and Indiana is affordable housing. The simple definition is when “households pay no more than 30 percent of their income for housing costs like rent, mortgage, and utilities. If a household pays more than 30 percent of their income for housing, they are considered “housing cost-burdened.” This article does a good job of explaining the distinctions.
